Youth Opera Comique – New Opera Singapore

Hello! We are the youth wing of New Opera Singapore, also known as Youth Opera Comique (YOC)! We are a bunch of fun-loving, yet passionate young opera singers with a desire to hone our operatic performance skills. As a company, we are focused on giving young singers opportunities to perform in unique, refreshing productions and exposure to this wonderful art form.

Keen to audition? Here are some details.

Prepare two contrasting pieces (aria, art song etc), both of which should be Operatic / Classical in nature. Musical theatre / pop songs are strictly not accepted.
In view of the Covid-19 situation, auditions will be online rather than in person. Please send us links to your 2 pre-recorded songs either via Google Drive or Youtube.
Your videos should not be performances from more than 6 months ago.
We will also be holding an interview via Zoom to get to know you a little better! During this interview, we will also have you recite a monologue we will have sent you upon confirming your interest in joining us.

What is the age range of singers in YOC?

Approximately 13-25! But we are extremely flexible, and welcome all keen singers with enthusiasm and dedication.

What do we do in YOC?

YOC’s work consists mainly of producing original productions both online and live (Check out our YouTube, FB and IG channels!) We also participate in NOS’ annual Gala event, host our very own recitals as well as to participate more actively in community outreach.

Are there any combined training/voice sessions?

Not at the moment. In YOC, we strongly emphasise each singer’s uniqueness and capacity, hence our singers encompass different ability levels. Each singer is very much responsible for their own learning; YOC is the platform for challenging our collective limits!

Is it necessary for me to have vocal training to join?

It is strongly preferable. If you would like for us to recommend one for you, please get in touch too!

What is the commitment level like?

Commitment varies throughout the year; normally we get busiest towards the end of the year (September-October) as that is when most of our productions take place, including our annual Youth Opera Comique production. However, if you aren’t free to perform then because of exams, don’t worry! There’s always other opportunities to perform. Almost all of us are students, so we understand if you have a busy schedule. However, should you decide to participate in a production, rehearsal attendance and commitment is expected.

Is there a membership fee?

Yes. The annual membership fee is $98.
